BRYAN, TX – A 35-year-old Bryan man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for assaulting an emergency room nurse.
Merwyn Melford Mexicano entered a guilty plea Wednesday to charges he punched the nurse in the face while being treated for injuries he had received in a car crash.
The Brazos County District Attorney’s Office statement said that on May 27, 2016 Mexicano crashed his car into a tree in a one vehicle accident near Texas Avenue ion College Station shortly after midnight.
College Station police determined first that he was intoxicated and second that he was injured and needed to go to the hospital.
At the hospital he was being treated for a broken nose and was being checked out for other possible injuries.
An emergency room nurse was trying to pout an identification bracelet on Mexicano’s wrist before taking him to have some scans done to determine the extent of his head trauma when the patient began cursing and punched the nurse three times in the face, resulting in injuries to the nurse.
The statement issued after the sentencing noted that on the way to the hospital, he had used vulgar language and had cursed at police officers for nearly 20 minutes.
Mexicano also pled guilty to a DWI charge.
The DA statement also noted that Mexicano had previously been sentenced to prison in New Mexico for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Assistant District Attorney Amanda Koenig said, “Emergency room workers should not become victims of violence simply because of their job. They work to serve our community and save lives every single day and deserve to be protected.”
